Introduction to Kinetic Art
Fall 2012 / Thursday evenings 6:30-10:30
Instructor: Bob Kephart
3 Credit course offered through MassArt's Continuing Education and SIM Departments
Interested in learning about kinetic art and practical techniques for making art that incorporates motion? This course covers hands on, simple, step-by-step, processes to make art that moves through the integration of motors. Students are introduced to the basics of mechanisms: circular motion through direct connections to motors, as well as levers, cams, and pulleys. Projects include how to correctly power a motor, how to add a power switch, how to switch the direction of a motor, and how to change the speed of a motor. Orientation sessions will familiarize students with the fundamentals of wood and metal fabrication techniques. Discussions on kinetic art history as well as a discourse on how it fits into the modern context will be held to inform your artistic pursuits. The goal of the course is to not only provide a basic technical framework, but also a conceptual grounding for students to create artwork that is supported by a contemporary critical structure.
