UV_TASTE

UV_TASTE is a wearable mouth piece that takes UV light and translates it into taste on the tongue of the user. Ultra Violet Radiation is is a phenomena that occurs outside of a human’s natural perception range, it is manifested as a wave which frequency is above violet color; the highest frequency perceived by the human eye. This object augments the human body and overlays on the user a new sensory input; it allows him/her to perceive the unperceived; it raises awareness on a natural invisible phenomena that affects our lives without being noticed.

Bubble Beyond

Bubble Beyond

Bubble Beyond is an interactive video installation that allows visitors to engage in an augmented reality where they can play with dozens of virtual bubbles. The bubbles emanate from the heads of visitors as they come into view. The bubbles capture their faces and float around randomly and then morph into expressive emoji. Visitors can pop their bubbles as well as other people’s bubbles.

Up to six visitors are tracked by a Kinect V2 system, which captures both their motion and image using the 1080p video camera. A custom algorithm generates the virtual bubbles which are projected on an 8 x 4.5 foot screen. After 30 seconds without human interaction, clouds of emoji float by. Bubble Beyond is a playful representation of our interaction and individual expression in the Internet Age.

The first digital video fine art coffee table. A hit at SCOPE: Miami Beach in December 2013, the piece features my digital video work: Bora Bora: Palm Fronds. Based on original footage shot in Bora Bora, the regular leaf structure of palms trees and strong island lighting help create endless geometric investigation of the green palette. (Other videos can also be shown.)

The table is a custom-made hard-wood fully functional piece of furniture. Topio (from the Greek word for landscape) takes my “modern landscapes” art work off the wall and out of “TV mode” to become the center of a room and integrate with its environment. The embedded screen is a custom-made professional signage design with commercial screen that can run flat and run 24/7. No remote controls needed. Dimming knob under table.

DreamDrops

DreamDrops is an interactive fiber/video installation where viewers can interact with felt sculptures, brought to life as a colorful, immersive video and audio environment.

Three DreamDrops are constructed with felt and paper. The felt gives them the form, and the paper provides a window into the virtual words. The Drops are suspended by their “tails”, from the ceiling at three heights. The red Drop is hung the most high, the blue Drop is lower, and the green Drop hangs the lowest.

As visitors walk among the DreamDrops, they can see the three animated worlds. The red world looks like clouds at sunset, the blue world looks like the depths of the oceans, and the green world looks like a lush, tropical forest. The three worlds are populated by “boids”, a flock/school of animated critters that dash about in small groups.Visitors are invited to poke their heads up into DreamDrops. They’ll see bursts of color and dynamic sparks triggered by their motion which is detected by a Microsoft Kinect sensor. People can interact with the boids, who will playfully investigate the human visitors, calling out with a futuristic wail. A hand clap gesture will trigger a colorful tunnel effect that will transport the visitor to other worlds.

With their installation, Rob and Kristina are exploring the threshold between personal space and public space in the technology era. The installation allows people to experience a private environment of light and color in a very public arena.

Several open source software projects were used in this installation:

  • OpenFrameworks - an open-source C++ library for creative coding
  • ofxKinectNui - Sadam Fujioka’s addon using the Microsoft Kinect
  • ofxMSAFluid - an addon for solving and drawing 2Dfluid systems by Memo Akten
  • ofxBoids - a flocking motion addon for by Satoshi Okami

INFLECTIONS

INFLECTIONS

INFLECTIONS is a generative system that temporally rearranges video sequences. The technical concept depends on the idea of a one-dimensional pseudo-random walk. We consider a movie timeline as a path. The program identifies a set of “inflection points” along this path. An inflection point is a moment without motion. At each inflection point, the software decides in real-time whether to go forward or backwards using a pseudo-random algorithm. It therefore temporally reorders the original sequence. This approach radically alters the images’ affective character, making them appear hesitant and uncertain. It shows how cinematic time determines the expressive meaning of images. The pseudo-random formula has tunable parameters which may produce diverse visual results. Different versions can thus be shown side by side, illustrating how the original sequence was only one out of many possible orderings. This method was inspired by the idea of possible worlds in modern logic.

During the fall of 1967, a heated debate over whether man had finally received contact from another civilization ensued. Not until the next year was another signal discovered and determined to be a rotating, radiating neutron star, spinning at a regular interval. When this radiation is detected by radio telescopes on Earth the pulsing is heard as a frequency or musical tone.

Extraterrestrial origins of pulsating stars examines the timings of 96 rotating pulsars as light and sound. The abstracted screen displays either single stars as a pulsing wave or clusters of stars, creating a cacophony of visual and sonic noise. 

The distant movement of these stars creates a visceral, sensory experience for the audience. Radiation to sound, sound to light, light to sensation.

Dial-A-Style - An Algorithmic Portrait Studio is an interactive video installation that allows visitors to create digital self-portraits in a variety of painterly styles. Through experimentation, viewers will come to understand and appreciate how various styles of painting impact the emotional connection to the artwork.

There are four major styles represented on the wheel:

  • Impressionism - in the style of Van Gogh
  • Cubism - in the style of Picasso and Braque
  • Pointillism - in the style of Chuck Close
  • Anime - the Japanese comic style

The wheel can stop in between neighboring styles, which results in a hybrid styled portrait.

Everything is Made of Atoms

Everything is Made of Atoms is an interactive new media installation that explores the entangled and ever-changing relationship between the body and technology. It draws on previous works created by artists such as Simon Penny's Traces (1999). The piece draws parallels between participants and their digitally-mediated images, expressing both as a whole and at the same time as a flow of constituent parts, the lifetimes of which, as philosopher Karen Barad (2003) argues, is not an attribute but the ongoing reconfigurings of the world.

Everything is Made of Atoms has two major software components: methods to access the stream of image, depth, and skeleton data from the Microsoft Kinect sensor, and routines to perform a high-performance computation of three-dimensional vortex dynamics. These methods are connected by an extensible framework of the artists own design.

JitterBot - A Dialog in Dance

Overview

JitterBot is an interactive installation that allows visitors to dance with a virtual robot. This piece explores the threshold of leading / following in dance, allowing the participant to have a dialog with a technological being, using their bodies as the means of communication.

Song Selection

The user chooses a song by raising an arm and pointing to one of the seven original compositions. The computer uses a motion tracking interface and custom software to choose the song.

The Dance

The user is invited to dance along with JitterBot, the red robot. The user's movement is tracked using the tracking interface and displayed on a projection surface as the green robot. Sometimes JitterBot follows the visitor's lead and sometimes JitterBot busts a move on its own, for the visitor to follow.

The Setup

The installation is centered on using the Microsoft Kinect sensor which allows for real-time full-body 3d motion capture. A layer of custom software interprets the 3d skeleton of the viewer and renders a stylized human form, the green robot. The movement of the red robot is driven partially by the viewer's motion, but it is also driven by a library of canned moves to give a sense of autonomy. The two robots are rendered as a series of elongated spheres using OpenGL. The resultant video image is projected on a screen on the wall, and the accompanying music is played through speakers.
