Orbit - WNW

One-minute looping digital video on a digital frame
Orbit - WNW

The trajectory of an object orbiting earth creates an infinite path of motion; a straight line becomes curved as a result of earth’s gravitational pull. A point of light as seen from earth moves in an eerie, yet swift and steady arc across the night sky, rising from the west and setting east. Orbit - WNW explores the perception of motion by altering footage of the International Space Station (ISS) orbiting earth as seen by the naked eye. The ISS, a bright point of light, is transformed to become a straight line referencing the infinite path. The result creates the illusion of unbelievable speed while the experience is as silent as the near vacuum of space.

Dancer

Dancer is from my new lineograph series created on electronic ink screens. The screens emit no light and are entirely reflective, mimicking the aesthetic of an ink drawing, except with movement. The screen also can be touched on and off, displaying hundreds of stills.

This series explores human artistic expression, essentialized within the simplicity of line drawing.

Computational physics is a discipline concerned with converting the (frequently) unsolvable equations of physics into a format far more amenable to computation: algorithms of much simpler arithmetic.

*As an artist and student of fluid dynamics, creating my own software has allowed me to create with fluids: to manifest what is ubiquitous yet invisible, to visually manipulate dimensions of space and time, to selectively merge realistic and patently artificial elements, and to de-contextualize fluids into their very essence: motion.

* When fluid flow is freed from the limitations of physical space, the algorithm, in all its malleable beauty, becomes the arbiter of reality.

CF11_1179 began as a field of bands of color, but evolved with no further guidance save the formulae of fluid dynamics into a burst of color and motion characterized by swirls and eddies as large as the entire piece and as small as the eye can see.

Electroscapes is a series of experimental images entitled created from a modified digital photographic process that incorporates surveillance software and locative media. These images, which meld datascapes with natural scenery, reinterpret the classic landscape shot by rendering visible the flow of electromagnetic information that moves within, and around, remote geographic environments.

As an artist, I am interested in how the ubiquitous yet invisible wireless activity in our culture expresses itself aesthetically and artistically on/in nature.  For Electroscapes, my process involved monitoring electromagnetic activity in remote locations (using packet-sniffing surveillance software developed by the FBI and other monitoring devices) and repeatedly photographing landscapes through a series of gels.  The frequency of the data collected, the variable, random and erratic use of wireless devices around these majestic landscapes, then affected the image-making process and shaped, in part, the aesthetic outcome of my images.

A permutation of abstract digital foreground, and picturesque, scenic background, Electroscapes questions the conceptual basis of how we perceive the “natural” world around us.

The Sameness of Duality

framed digital print
2011
Artwork by [user-name]

The Sameness of Duality is the product of a custom branching algorithm that allows for variations in the number of branches at a given point, the length of the branching segments and the angle in which they branch. This particular branching configuration explores the idea that two sides of any one thing can be similar yet appear different depending on the angle in which one views them.

The Sameness of Duality relates to my recent frustration in dealing with "myself" - where I find that it is hard to separate oneself from another, and accordingly decide which self is the true "me."
